You are right, both seem to work. In that case, might I suggest
disabling auto-completion for the author field, or completing only
up to the comma, and suggesting the first name only after a comma
has been entered? Thus,

  entering:                  becomes:
  Mar                        Martin Krafft
  Herrm                      Herrmann
  Herrmann,                  Hermann, Gregor
