It looks like the issue was a communication problem . One side believing there
where no way to call the current job and the other filing at explaing how it was still
available (by keeping most of the topic on the rationale behind the old syntax removal).
I disagree that it's okay: removing those shortcuts was pointless, changing it back would likely be trivial, and it basically only leads to irritate people. However, it is possible to workaround without patching bash: "alias %=fg" seems to fix it perfectly, for the fg case. It doesn't make %& work, but I never used that one..
