Success at last!
I downloaded the kernel 2.6.11 version of the MPPE/MPPC patch from http://www.polbox.com/h/hs001/ and patched my kernel sources successfully.
I then recompiled my kernel with the same method used previously, and I can now connect to work via VPN successfully with MPPE.
Good to hear it works.
I'll probably extract from their patch the MPPC part (which is patented) and package the rest as the MPPE patch.
