As I needed to reboot following the recent security update for kernel
2.6.18, I re-ran my failure case. I renamed my 'eth0' interface to
something that wouldn't be found at startup time, and then after seeing
ddclient report that it couldn't find the update host, I fixed the
network configuration. Within about 5 minutes, ddclient reported that
it had successfully updated my hostname.
So it looks like you've fixed it.
