Yes, I've heard about SCIM not working properly in Java programs before.

Sorry I don't have a lot of time to investigate this problem right now,
but I downloaded your Java program, ran it in my unstable system with
Sun Java 1.6, XIM mode, and couldn't reproduce the problem following the
steps you described above.

I also use en_US.UTF-8 locale.  Would you please use XIM mode (by
command "im-switch -s scim", log out X and log in again) and retry?

I would also like to see the SCIM configuration files on your system:
    /etc/scim/global
    /etc/scim/config
    ~/.scim/global
    ~/.scim/config
Can you attach them to a reply to the BTS?
