This has been a feature others have suggested and I've thought of. There are a couple problems: 1) As you mention, there is no (easy) way to determine the upstream version. 2) You can't recursively call dpkg during a postinst script to install the generated package. Any way I can think of working around this is either against policy or would be very hackish. 3) I rather dislike debconf questions -- if this was added at all, it would need to be low-priority. But that means means that the "target audience" for this feature might not see it anyway, so I'm not sure this is a great idea. But, I'd certainly accept a well-done patch for this feature, if there is someone out there that is itching to implement this. =) -- Wesley J.
