i was surprised too.  sure was a lot easier than actually having to modify any

personally, i think that it would suffice to add a note in changelog.Debian.gz 
and {NEWS,README}.Debian instructing the user that from this point forward, 
if they see that error message that they can simply delete the .ilist file in 
the cow directory.  it should automagically be regenerated right?

if i fail to persuade you of this, i can think of some other alternatives 
(perhaps introducing code inside ilistcreate to try and catch this situation, 
or passing sizeof(struct ilist) from outside the chroot to inside the chroot 
somehow and looking for a difference ), but any other solution would 
obviously be more complex.
