I think I already explained this in my previous email. Again: given an
unreadable directory, it isn't possible to tell that the operation
failed because the file doesn't exist (the "this condition" referenced
in POSIX) as opposed to failing because the file does exist but the
directory permissions don't permit the operation.
Not writing a diagnostic message when
the considered file doesn't exist is certainly not a Unix fundamental,
