It would be great if someone(s) could solve this problem.
I tried to install acpid, but, as these bugs show, it won't install.

I tried stopping hal before installing. First problem:

I get the same problem with aptitude install acpi-support or aptitude
upgrade.

I aptitude remove'd both packages and then reinstalled.
That seemed to work.

My guess is that these are only an issue because of previous,
unsuccessful, installations. However, a fix that could handle such a
case might be useful if there are others out there with broken
installations from this problem.

Second problem: I restarted hal, but I'm not sure if my (KDE) desktop
session is still in communication with it. Could anyone clarify that?
(I put in a CD and a notifier poppped up, which seems like a good sign.)
