this issue about the permissions on /var/mail is item 7.10 in the FAQ that
comes with alpine in imap/docs/. According to it, if you want alpine to
work correctly, you need to either change the permissions of /var/mail so
anyone has write access, make alpine sgid mail (as the old pine package
used to do), package the mlock program that comes with alpine (not so good
for performance) or not use the traditional mbox format. Otherwise dotlock
locking will fail and alpine may be unreliable.
You might want to check with the packager of uw-imap what his plans are,
since he is dealing with the exact same source code.
