Thanks for the pointers. In between, I played with the keys and it worked, then I switched back to "default" and it seems to work since. I also upgraded to a newer kernel (2.6.22) at the same time, I don't know if it's related... I also reinstalled "xcreensaver" a few hours before (just to do some tests). Is it possible that the availability of the xscreensaver package changes the behaviour of g-p-m? In any case, the problem seems to have disappeared for me...
