This is fixed in current CVS. Please note that the syntax in the task files allowes "packageA | packageB" which is listed this way in one line.
There is a debug line sent to stdout that probably should go to stderr: DEBUG: CDDNAME = debian-gis
Fixed in CVS. I'm working on your further report about '-a' and '-m' problems - I guess the output regarding these additional option was brocken from the beginning because I never used them myself and just took over from former Debian-Edu gen-control. So either it was broken there as well or I confused something. I hope to get this fixed until tonight.
