*immediately* after boot up or only when it tries to load the X interface?
A couple of pages of text rolls by that seems to be the boot script and
that completes. Then what seems like what should be a graphic interface
come up. But it is "black". Maybe black isn't as right as no image. The
lcd lamp is on. The X interface would be the GUI right? I can tell the
computer doesn't shut down. It sounds like the drive(s) are still working-
not much activity though. Like it's waiting for input from me. I've tried
5 different distro's and they all behave the same way. I'm downloading
YellowDog right now in fact.
Thanks for your time Christian,
So, indeed, the bug belong to the X server, not really to the
installer.
I'm not an X expert, especially on powerpc. So, I reassign this to
xserver-xorg.
You might want to send the machine's xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log
to this bug so that X maintainers can help you. You can get them by :
- when the screen is black, hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login at the console
- if that doesn't work, boot as single user, then temporarily remove
the /etc/rc2.d/S??gdm link so that X doesn't try to start at bootup.
Very good Christian, I appreciate it. I have studied through posts
looking for clues and wondered if I may have an incompatible video card.
The ATI X800 XT. I can't find my original card that was in this Mac to
test that though. I must have pitched it unfortunately. I will compile
the data as you suggested and go from there. It's late for me I'm
heading for bed. Have a good night
Steve
