i can now report that the recompiled vnc4server package works fine (ie, i worked in the usual way without strange issues) and survived a shared eclipse session with ~10 clients without crashing. This doesn't mean much (the "buggy" package was also sometimes working fine for a whole 1h long session, and sometimes crashing a few times in a row) but it is a positive sign.
