Package: bootpc Version: 0.64-6 Severity: critical
Dear maintainer, I have the problem, that bootpc gives me a 'network unreachable' answer, although the 'destination' is the usual broadcast address (all 1 or 255.255.255.255). This is for a Linux 2.6 kernel in a Debian 4.0 (with proposed-updates) setup. The long story: For several reasons I'd like to use the 'BOOTP' option in /etc/network/interfaces, as DHCP - although working - has several drawbacks for me, that we could discuss separately. Now, the only program available for the bootp method in Debian (4.0, alias stable, alias etch) with 'ifup/down' is 'bootpc'. But bootpc returns the error given above, for any(!) serveraddress with the exception of '0.0.0.0' - which yields no answer. Any other address (including giving no 'server'-option or explicitely stating 255.255.255.255) returns 'network not reachable', coming from the 'sendto'-call which returns 'error 101 (=ENETUNREACH)', if my analysis is correct. Now we have a 'hen and egg' problem, as the interface should get its address and netmask from the bootp-server. I have other bootp-clients (mainly printers, but also other network devices) in use, thus my bootp-setup works. I can also fetch the (correct) parameters with bootpc, when the interface is up and running (initialized) ip-wise. Now either I'm doing something wrong, or bootpc is, or the 'sendto'- call with the 2.6[.18-22]-kernels isn't working properly for broad- cast calls. So, please, hand this to the 'guilty part'. I'd just like to be able to use the 'bootp' method in 'interfaces'. Thanks and best regards, Ruediger Oberhagd -- Dr. H.-R. Oberhage Mail: Univ.
