What is it that you expected to happen that didn't happen? Is it the fact that smbd didn't restart, or is it the nmbd errors? Are you using an unmodified version of the /etc/init.d/samba script from the Debian package? The behavior shown above does not seem consistent with this; the Debian script should not give the output shown above. Can you confirm that this is the unmodified init script, and then check that the problem is reproducible?
