OK, this bug was caused by my using xinetd to start partimaged. That doesn't work, so I guess that when partimage tried to connect there, it didn't get the version string it wanted from the server, and gave the cryptic "version string mismatch" message.
So this was my fault. OTOH, it would be a lot more useful in this case if partimage failed with a more descriptive error message, i.e. I can't connect to a partimaged server, or even better, someone else besides partimaged is listening on port 4025.
