Thanks for your extended info. Unfortunately I can't see where the problem may lie.
I have built an rsync package with a not-stripped rsync binary, which should help gdb show a proper backtrace. I'll send you the link to it separately; please try that version. A fix for empty filename is in there (I ran into that myself, which led to rsync overflowing the stack due to endless recursion), although that shouldn't affect your problem.
