Just as clarification: the 3.4 stuff comes from g77, the currently used
Fortran compiler. For C/C++ files, normal gcc (currently 4.2?) is used.

Changing the Fortran compiler is a distribution-wide goal, where we
(Octave) are mostly a leaf in a large dependency tree.
