Hi Brice Some more on this: With the new X reinstalled I deleted lines up my .xsession file until it worked - but it didn't. I find that fluxbox itself seems to be the problem
startx /usr/bin/fluxbox fails as usual startx /usr/bin/blackbox works just fine. I tried some stracing but there was nothing obviously wrong to mey eyes.
