It seems better, but I don't think this streching worked out so well.
I increased 'bar' to 0.3, and that's good with COLUMNS=80.
But with COLUMNS=111 I still have about twenty columns worth of empty
space to the right hand side of the screen.
Then I increased 'bar' to 0.5, but that broke it with COLUMNS=80.
