Yes, now that you mention it, I was running beryl from debian.beryl-project.org. I have recently removed beryl completely from my system and switched to icewm (beryl is too much nuisance and distraction, icewm is simple and fast). I will now switch back to gnome, observe the situation for some time and report back. If no problem, the likely culprit(s) will be identified -- compiz and beryl.
