The version you have tried to install is the previous stable version of Debian (3.1), codename Sarge. A newer version, Etch (4.0), has been released last April and it has far better support for newer hardware. You can freely optain ready to burn CD images from: http://www.debian.org/CD/ Could you please try to install your computer with Etch and get back to us with the results?
