I cannot reproduce this here. Can you please provide a minimal example? With this one: \documentclass{article} \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[ngerman]{babel} % \usepackage[greek,ngerman]{babel} \input{lgrenc.def} \newcommand{\griech}[1]{{\fontencoding{LGR}\selectfont #1}} \begin{document} \griech{>'adhloc} \end{document} I get no error message and greek typesetting.
