I tried to view some ascii-files with german umlauts äöü with less, but I got only the typical control codes ... after reading the manpages I tried to set LESSCHARSET or LESSCHARDEF to utf-8 and unset both variables because LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8 but no luck. less is not printing the german caharacters correctly.
