Yes, lastfm used to support both alsa and oss on Linux.  Then in July 
2006 they released a new version of the client.  From that point on, 
the client was hardcoded to only use alsa.

This was not a problem for you because 1.1.90 was a much older version 
of the client (pre July 2006).  It was only last week that a new 
version finally entered testing.

I think upstream hopes to again support multiple audio systems on 
Linux, but I don't think it's a high priority for them right now.  
However, I'm working on a patch that will again let you choose 
between alsa and oss.  It's mostly working.  I just need to clean it 
up a bit and do some more testing.
