One data point against compiz on this: if I use compiz in the session, then disable it (replace it with metacity after turning compiz into a normal session entry), then switch out I can switch back without any issue. So compiz is at least tickling the right bugs in the server here...
Not that you can do much to deal with it if you don't have the same drivers, so I still agree that nvidia-glx is the right place for this.
