Actually it should not. When clicking a link in rng, rng just calls 'xdg-open someurl'. This program usually returns as soon as the browser shows the URL. In your case it seems to wait until the browser is closed again. Unfortunately I can't reproduce your bug under gnome either, so I need some more infos Could you please start xdg-open http://debian.org in a console and check if xdg-open returns when the browser opened?
