I don't understand what the bug report or wish is. If your system is
misconfigured such that hostname returns an FQDN (as opposed to
hostname --fqdn), then there is very little I can do, now is there?
Ah, sorry - it took several tries to finally get the message sent - that
system had other issues :(
The missing info was to ask if you'd consider using
`hostname --short`
As to what a naked `hostname` should return, I think you'll still
find two camps (likely even within Debian):
* Those who think `hostname` should act like `hostname --fqdn`
* Those who think `hostname` should act like `hostname --short`
Calling one option 'misconfigured', is akin to an editor, mta, or other
e-penis argument :)
Which is why there are two options for hostname - so that you can get
the information you want, regardless of which camp your admin belongs to.
