Bug #109709 is a wishlist item requesting that ping do some DNS caching. It doesn't currently. The OS itself doesn't do DNS caching either, so if you want to cache DNS lookups, you should install bind9 and configure it as a caching resolver, probably listening only on the loopback interface.
