Depending how busy the machine is, and how fast the user can type, one can display a considerable portion of her password inadvertently. I am embarrassed when this happens to me. To fix this, I suggest not disabling echo at the Password: prompt. Instead, disable echo at the Login: prompt, and have getty echo the characters it wants to, instead of letting the Linux console echo every character it sees.
