true

Whereas libc6-i386 provides the standard libs (libnss_files, libnss_nis,
...) for 32bit applications on this architecture

also true

there is no chance for
32bit binaries to use the LDAP nameservice because no library exists.

true but only part of the story

Suggestion:
Provide additional "libnss-ldap-i386" package to support this.

This isn't possible at the current time - it would require ia32 based
libldap2 and libkrb53 as pre-requisites.

Debian's multiarch support is getting better, but has a way to go -
there is yet to be a mechanism for building multiarch packages :(

As we march to multiarch, however, there is always a trade-off on how
much to do (where is the point of diminishing returns).

For the time being, your best bet would be to ask the ia32-libs package
maintainers to add libnss-ldap and its pre-requisites to their package.

<calc> knghtbrd: gnome 2.0 will be out in a few months, not sure how it
will compare to kde 2.0 though
<knghtbrd> calc: Just as bloated, just as buggy, and every Gnome 2 app
       will depend on 30 libraries.
<Slimer> knghtbrd: so what changes from 1.0 ?
