I had also the problem that I couldn't print duplex and 2-up on
HP LaserJet (4000 and 4050) printers.
I am using sid with kde and cupsys as printing system.
I fiddled with all the option but nothing worked.
(Even though I could print duplex/2-up from windows machines.)
Eventually I checked the printer setting (on the physical device),
and I found that the Duplex setting was 'Off' on the printer (in the paper menu). Setting Duplex=On on the printer solved all problems.
