Dunno what you did but it seems you"re missing some base packages on
your system....

I did not do anything special. That is why I reported the bug. I dont
know how I ended up without initscripts. I know that I have not
removed it myself.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -S /lib/init/vars.sh
initscripts: /lib/init/vars.sh

Anyway, I fixed the problem with

sudo apt-get install initscripts sysvinit
