After talking to the authors, they hinted that this particular bug  
was fixed in trunk. I downloaded[1] and built the snapshot from  
2007-06-18 and can confirm that System.Data.SqlClient *is* usable again.

The relevant patch is the one included in the mailing list posting  
that I referred to previously.
