I tried to reproduce your report. As user noel with samba 3.0.25a-1 $ sudo smbpasswd -x noel Deleted user noel. $ smbpasswd Old SMB password: New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Could not connect to machine 127.0.0.1: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE Failed to change password for noel So I get an error message. I will reproduce this on an etch machine because you reported it with samba version 3.0.24-6 (but I have to search one here at Debconf:)).
