Disabling auto-update seems like a reasonable solution. I'm on vacation probably for another month -- in between houses and jobs at the moment, so life is in turmoil, in a good way though. If someone wants to NMU this bug (and possibly other accumulated Azureus bugs), I wouldn't object. Otherwise, I'll get to it as soon as I'm up and running again.
