I'm not an expert on the install CD setup. My understanding was that binaries for the images are built from the udebs packages that I or others (if someone does an NMU) does an upload. What I don't know is how, given an .iso image, to determine which udeb versions were used to build the binaries on that install image. So the only thing I can think of is that different set of e2fsprogs udebs were used for thw two installer images that you tried using.
