Unfortunately, after the last upgrade of xorg the proprietary driver
broke.  So I tried the open-source one.  It still doesn't work, locking
up the  entire system :(

I'm using vesa for now.

This was with 
ii  xserver-xorg-video-nv                1:2.0.2-1

I believe I backed out the proprietary changes properly (commented out
glx and nvidia, as well as the disabling of DRI and glcore--i.e., tested
with dri and glcore enabled).
