The state of the package in the BTS is not very good. It might be worth to package this new upstream version and do a check on all open bugs and close when appropriate... Several bugs are very simple bugs and are quite important for proper integration in the Debian system (for example #390672). Please find some time for xscreensaver or ask for help so that others can do it.
