        % /etc/init.d/alsa force-reload

That worked. It also abruptly closed all the programs that were using
sound at the time, (these weren't doing anything at the time, so no data
lost); but it's progress. After the 'alsa force-reload' I had
to restart 'timidity' then 'pulseaudio', and now both seem to be
behaving correctly.
