okay, let me know when that's uploaded, and i'll take a look.  the
more i think about it, the more the init script method makes sense.
if it's in an init script, you can also install the packages (which you
couldn't do if you used a hook in the middle of an apt-get/dpkg run.
however, maybe having something in the kernel-package that determines
there are missing modules at installation time would be helpful too.
and all this behaviour could be controlled via debconf, for the folks
who object to some initscript installing packages on their system.
