In Xfce settings > Desktop > Behaviour, Desktop icons is set to "Minimized application icons", with "Allow Xfce to manage the desktop" ticked. I find it quite surprizing though, that when switching between workspaces, the icons of the applications on the first workspace are shown as if these applications were minimized, and then disappear. If I see correctly what happens, it looks like the first workspace disappears, the desktop appears, the icons appear on the desktop, and then the desktop is repainted, without the icons.
