Later versions of rsync have the --itemize-changes option, which will also show these differences. Last week the upstream author came up with a patch for the specific problem that you demonstrated. I'm undecided whether I should wait for 2.6.5, or to make a Debian version of 2.6.4 that has that patch in it...
