I have worked around this problem. I observed it does not happend when one rlogins to another node. I then rlogged in to my same node and set the display back. I can now run the shell in xemacs. Yes the problem does not occur at all when one issues a single shell command.
The problem is simply solved by setting the DISPLAY variable to the local node
"setenv DISPLAY fred:0" after first executing xhost +. No rlogin is actually required.
