Did you check this? An Etch installation with vanilla 2.6.19.2 kernel started to produce disk errors and later damaged my VM's xfs filesystem beyond xfs_repair. I was unable to recreate a VM, the etch installer failed to partition the hard drive. After a few trials I got it to partition the drive and install. It worked for a few weeks with lots of xfs errors in the logs. I tried this with real hard drives and disk images. I'm currently installing etch in a image file smaller 4GB, no errors. - not only windows - breaks existing VMs!
