Gerrit,

This package is either *very* broken, or very mis-named. I installed git-daemon-run expecting to have a working git server, in the same way as one would install exim4-daemon, or apache, or any other network service.

I would not expect when installing this package that I have to completely replace the init system. Especially an init system that is so completely broken like runit. The install of runit doesn't even result in a working/changed init, and instructions to do so (which are on a web-site no less - not even in the package) have six steps of which the last is

  # mv /sbin/init /sbin/init.sysv
  # ln -s runit-init /sbin/init

Now colour me purple, but the last thing that any administrator of a Debian system wants to do is go moving package-managed binaries around. What happens when you remove runit? You get a system that won't boot.

By the way, I'm on a "standard" Debian system (not a vserver).

If the "the whole and single purpose of the git-daemon-run package is to provide a runit service." then please rename this package to git-daemon-runit or similar and specify in the package description specifically that it involves a change of init. Or else create git-daemon package that will work for *any* init system (without depending on a particular one).

Actually, I think I'll go bug the 'git' maintainer to put an init.d script in his package.

Mark.
