Okay, I actually managed to reproduce the problem. You must have run
epiphany or another libxul-based application as root at some time in the
past.

I don't know why the autoregistration mechanism doesn't avoid this, but
libxul is using the .dat files that got created at that time in
/usr/lib/xulrunner/components.

Remove both files (compreg.dat and xpti.dat) and the problem will be
gone.

I will add this to the postinst scripts.
