Hello *,

I read this posting rying to find a solution for something that is most
probably the same problem that you have. My scanner (same model as
wendigo's) takes forever to warm up. I managed to solve this problem by
ensuring that - while scanning - the lamp does not turn off for 3
minutes (option lampOff 180). The first time I scanned my scanner would
take a long time to warm up, but all subsequent scans ran fine.
Unfortunately that behavior changed after my update to Etch (I also
manually updated my kernel and my hardware, so I can't exactly say which
of that caused the new behavior, but I very strongly believe it's the
kernel).
Since then my scanner's light turns off 3 seconds after the scan, no
matter what I set the lampOff parameter to. I also tried to change to
change the warmup time but this yielded inacceptably poor scanning
results. So I did a little research, and in one of my bright moments I
figured, that the usbcore's autosuspend timer might cause the turn off
of the scanner light. So I added a file /etc/modprobe.d/usbcore containing:

- --snip--
options usbcore autosuspend=180
- --snap--

removed all usb related modules and reinserted them again. An viola! Now
the light stays on, preventing it to cool off and the warmup takes
significantly less time (10 seconds per new scan) and above all that the
scan quality is superb again. There might be some implications on power
saving with idle usb-devices, but so far no problems have arised (arisen?!)
- From my point of view this solved the problem in a much better way than
to reduce the warmup time.

Regards, wasi
