I can reproduce this bug in xterm as well. I normally use gnome-terminal, but it only took two or three times to reproduce it on xterm. If you'd like, I can provide a picture which shows it running in uxterm (xterm with UTF-8 support; part of the xterm package).
This bug tends to manifest itself much more on my laptop, which is faster than my desktop, which leads me to believe that there's a race condition.
